That evening, as Roisin bounded up the stairs and into Fiona’s room, she arrived to find a new resident in No. 6. Fiona had given birth to a daughter she named Clodagh. Peggy had helped deliver the baby.

“You see, I’m not just a pretty face,” Peggy said as she tilted the newborn toward Roisin.

The baby moved her body restlessly as if trying to escape from the tight confines of her blanket. Her eyes were closed, her lips pursed. She had dark brown hair, and when Peggy moved her arms and the sun fell on the infant’s head, Roisin could see the red tint of the Kilbane’s hair color.

“Isn’t she a cutie pie?” Peggy said, mimicking an American accent. “An American cutie pie.”

Thereafter, Raymond called twice a week and then three times a week, and finally when Clodagh was twelve months old Fiona and Raymond were married in St. Patrick’s on Mulberry Street. The only people present at the wedding were Roisin, Trish, and Peggy. After her wedding, Fiona stopped making her shirts and moved into Room 15, which had two bedrooms and a large living room with enough space for a table and chairs and two comfortable armchairs. They lived in the same room until Ger’s disappearance twelve years later.
